From the Stage to the Pitch (and the Boardroom): The Power of Great Leaders

Over the weekend, as my daughter prepared for her theater performance, a text came through from one of her teachers. It wasn't a logistics reminder. It was one of the clearest leadership lessons I've read all year.

Reading her message reminded me why the principles of theater, soccer, business, and life are ultimately the same thing.

1. You Win on the Preparation, You Shine on the Field

Whether you are stepping onto a stage under hot lights, walking onto a soccer pitch for a 90-minute battle, or leading a high-stakes business transformation, the magic happens long before the curtain goes up. You do the hard work in rehearsal. You run the drills in the rain. You do the tedious strategy work behind closed doors so that when it is game time, you can step up and shine.

2. Leadership Means Lifting the Ensemble

In soccer, you do not win without selfless passing and strong captains on the pitch. In business, you do not scale without empowering teams. And in theater, as this teacher highlighted, you do not have a show without your Dance Captains holding the line. True leaders do not demand the spotlight. They build the stage for others to stand on.

3. Standing Alongside Over Standing Above

Her gratitude to her fellow directors said it all: "Thank you for allowing me to stand alongside you guys." But it didn't stop there. She wrote: "I'm always blessed to have the opportunity to share and teach young professionals like you guys with a company that I respect with all my heart."

That is modern executive leadership in a nutshell. The best teams, whether in sports, corporate halls, or artistic companies, are built on mutual respect. When you genuinely love who you work with, excellence is a natural byproduct.

4. Gratitude as a Strategy

She closed her note with double purple hearts and pure pride. Reading it made me reflect deeply on my own journey. I was immediately reminded of the exceptional mentors, bosses, and coaches who saw my potential early on. They guided me, challenged me, and gave me space to grow. They are the reason I became who I am today.

A Note of Thanks 💜

To the teachers, coaches, directors, and mentors who pour their heart into our kids, adults, and teams: Thank you.

You are not just teaching them how to hit a mark, kick a ball, or execute a strategy. You are showing them what passion looks like in action. You are role modeling how to be humble, generous, and relentless in the pursuit of excellence.

When young minds see adults leading with this level of authenticity and respect, it sets the bar for what they will expect from their future leaders and who they will become themselves.

Here's to breaking legs, winning matches, building great companies and teams, and never forgetting to thank the people who make the journey worthwhile.
