How Our Own Thanksgiving Tradition Inspires Thanks and Growth

Thanksgiving has become my favorite holiday, even though it was an adopted tradition for me after moving to the U.S.

There’s something profoundly special about Thanksgiving that resonates deeply with me, despite it being new to my cultural experience. It’s not just about savoring a delicious feast or gathering with loved ones; it’s about pausing to reflect on the year, to express gratitude, and to appreciate the connections we have.

One of the most meaningful traditions we’ve established is writing letters to ourselves. This practice has become an integral part of our Thanksgiving celebration, adding a unique and personal touch to the holiday.

Here’s how it works: each year, during our Thanksgiving gathering, everyone attending the celebration we host, writes a letter to their future selves. In these letters, we reflect on the past year, articulate what we’re grateful for, and outline our hopes and goals for the year ahead.

Once the letters are completed, we seal them in envelopes and store them in a special box. The act of writing these letters is itself a moment of introspection and connection.

We take time to think about our journey over the past year, celebrate our achievements, and acknowledge the challenges we’ve faced. It’s a process that deepens our understanding of ourselves and of each other.

When the next Thanksgiving arrives, we gather to open these letters together. The experience of reading our past selves’ reflections is incredibly moving. It’s remarkable to see how our thoughts, aspirations, and experiences have evolved over the year. This ritual not only allows us to appreciate our personal growth but also reinforces our family and friends bonds. It’s a powerful reminder of the journey we’ve been on, the progress we’ve made, and the continuity of our shared experiences. It's also an invitation to return home for the following Thanksgiving dinner.

The tradition of writing and revisiting our letters adds a profound layer of meaning to the holiday. It transforms Thanksgiving from a simple celebration into a moment of deep reflection and connection. It’s a time when we come together not only to give thanks but also to celebrate who we’ve become and to look forward to the future.

This tradition enriches our Thanksgiving experience, making it more than just a holiday. It’s a celebration of our journey, a testament to our growth, and an opportunity to connect with each other on a deeper level. It’s a reminder of what we have, who we are, and where we’re headed, making each Thanksgiving a truly special and reflective occasion.
